“I’ve been a COPERFAM member for 3 years now and with it I feel that I’m not in the boat alone. You’re in the middle of an ocean full of challenges and you’re with other people, everyone in the same boat fighting for the same goal. The cooperative is very important. If it hadn’t been for the Fairtrade-certified cooperative, I don’t think we’d be producing oranges any more. The countryside has changed a lot, it’s very dynamic and the cooperative gives us this support, it’s always up to date.”

Our Origin

Workers become farmers and landowners

Coperfam was created to provide differentiated services to orange small family farmers in the region around Bebedouro, palced in the Brazilian citrus belt (São Paulo state).

At the time of the cooperative creation, the citrus sector faced a deep crisis due to low prices of the fruit in the market, high production costs and the high incidence of pests. Numerous hectares of orange crop were eradicated and abandoned at the time. The family farmers were heavily affected.

The small family farmers from Bebedouro region found an alternative in the creation of the cooperative, COPERFAM. In 2014, the cooperative got the FAIRTRADE certification, with the objective of having a fairer marketing for its producers, adding value to the product and assisting in the development of the small producer.
Today, the cooperative grows every year by supporting small family producers and workers, developing projects for continuous improvement in the production, environmental and human rights protection.

Since 2018, we have participated in projects aiming increasing the rural families and workers weelbeing. In annually bases, we develop work plans to target this objective. Our action plan includes training, awareness, guidance and advisor to our members to better monitor the process of hiring labor, know and respect the rights of workers and prevent discrimination.

To reaffirm our commitment with the protection and promotion of human rights, the inclusion of women and youth, we created a Protection and Inclusion Policy that is in the way to be approved by our members. We are also commited to support family succession.
