“I’m a small family farmer, I’ve been farming since I was a kid and I look after my property with my wife, daughter and son-in-law. We manage our crops with agroecological and regenerative practices, even more focused on soil conservation and organic orchard management. In 2021, we set up a demonstration agroforestry area, a system that aims to manage the system so that it is maintained with the material generated there and reaches equilibrium, maintaining the production of several crops at the same time.”

Introduction

Agriculture in balance with the environment to grow healty families and crops

The COOPSALZANO cooperative was born from the interest in looking for better price negotiations for oranges in the market.

We believe that the union of small cooperative orange producers is necessary to meet the market demand in terms of volume and quality and to be able to make group purchases of agricultural inputs at lower prices. The union also allow us to look together for sustainable agricultural practices adapted to our local conditions to produce healthy food, with innovative techniques maintaining the production and quality, without leaving aside the farmers economic growth.

Our cooperative members are committed with the environment and biodiversity conservation in balance with the production. This is key to increase our quality of life, our ecosystem resilience and keeping resources for the next generations.

Mission and goals

Mission

Our mission is to organize our members to be able to reach value-added markets for our product and improve the quality of life, achieving the socio-environmental development of the families and the community. COOPSALZANO is formed by small family farmers, who work the land with their own family labor and with the neighbour’s support exchanging services between the cooperative members. The small farms are highly diversified producing other commercial crops and food for the family and the community.

Goal

As a cooperative, we intend to expand our services to be able to serve the largest number of small producers in the region and, in the future, be able to cover more than 1500 families that grow oranges in the northern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Our Cooperative values producing high quality oranges to meet the customer needs and to produce respecting the people and the environment. We promote the union of our members around common interests to get stronger each day.

Due Diligence in Human and environmental rights

COOPSALZANO is committed to contribute with the members and families well-being through the development of projects in the areas identified by the members as priority. This includes: health, education, sustainable production and environmental conservation.

For health, the “+ Saúde” project offers to members and their families complementary health services covers medical and dental services, laboratory tests and the acquisition of medicines.

In the education area the project “Releasing Dreams “, is developed in partnership with regional institution and municipal school. COOPSALZANO fostered the creation of a school cooperative, formed by students. The project aims spread the Cooperativism concepts and values and boost the leadership ability exercising colaboration, inclusion and negotiation at the same time they propose and run projects in benefit the schoolar community.

With the municipal school Henrique Dias we developed the project “Model Agroforestry” with the implementation of model agroforestry where students can experience this production technique, which reconciles the production of vegetables, fruits and other plants together. The students produce food to the school without the use of agrochemicals at the same time they help the soil regeneration with agricultural practicees like green mass cover.

COOPSALZANO invests resources facilitating the access of small family farmerss to innovative, environmentally friendly production technologies that seek soil conservation and regeneration as a central element to maintain crop productivity and adaptation to climate change and external weather events. The reduction of the use of external inputs, the diversification of crops and the production of food for local consumption are part of the good agricultural practices promoted by the organization.

The projects developed by COOPSALZANO are carried out in partnership with other institutions. We constantly seek to establish partnerships, because we believe that cooperation brings greater strength and reaches a greater number of people in the communities involved. We WORK IN partnerships with municipal government, schools, philanthropic entities, financial institutions and the entire community.

COOPSALZANO is committed to contribute with the Sustainable Development Goals investing 28% of the Fairtrade Premium and its own resources in actions related to responsible production and consumption, 24% in actions that contribute to the communities sustainability, 16% to develop partnerships, 13% in the conservation of the environment and biodiversity, 13% in actions aimed to improve education and 6% in improving health services.
